I love the contrast between the two snippet too.
You are an A.S. Byatt fan! I'm a fan. Particularly of that trilogy which includes The Virgin in the Garden (if I am not mistaken about it). Tower of Babel was really captivating and though tough to read in places, it was worth it. I think about it from time to time.
I've not heard of this particular book. I will have to ask about it at the library.
